The Cold Shot is the new low-gain overdrive from Tone Ink — designed to be transparent (well… maybe not always 😄).
It’s a tribute to the timeless tones of Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer, Eric Clapton, Robben Ford, and Larry Carlton.

Its circuit was engineered for versatility and adjustable voicing, allowing you to select the mid-cut frequency across three key regions inspired by classic amplifiers:

  • Dumb (200Hz)

  • Marsh (700Hz)

  • Twin (500Hz)

🎛️ Controls

🔘 MID CUT SWITCH
Defines the center frequency of the Mid control.
💡 Tip: start with the Mid knob all the way down to clearly hear the tonal shift of each voice.

These three mid-cut profiles emulate the EQ curves of classic amp preamps — Marshall, Fender, and Dumble — when their tone controls are set around noon.

This is a passive control placed at the end of the circuit:

  • At maximum → EQ curve remains flat.

  • As it’s rolled back → emphasizes the selected frequency cut:

    • Dumble: 200Hz

    • Marshall: 700Hz

    • Fender: 500Hz

🔘 FULL EQ (BASS, MID, TREBLE)
The EQ section behaves naturally, much like an amp.
The magic is in the Mid control:

  • At max, it’s flat relative to the circuit.

  • As it’s lowered, it sculpts the tone more dramatically.
Start with Mid at minimum to compare modes, then fine-tune to taste.

The Bass control interacts with the gain stage — past 2 o’clock it may start to fuzz out slightly.
If you’re using a thick-sounding guitar (like a Les Paul), try dialing back the bass for better clarity.

🔘 COMP SWITCH
This 3-way switch changes the clipping texture, headroom, and compression feel, reminiscent of pedals like the Klon, Morning Glory / Blues Breaker, and TS808.

Compression may reduce overall output, so use the Volume knob to compensate.

Modes:

  • GLORY: more headroom, more volume, open and uncompressed feel.

  • KLN: moderate compression, smooth top-end polish, elegant tone.

  • 808: heavier compression, easy saturation, slightly lower volume (compensate with output).
