COLD SHOT – Low Gain Overdrive Tone Ink

The Cold Shot is Tone Ink’s new low gain overdrive, designed to be “transparent” — or not (haha).
It’s a tribute to the masters of expressive tone — from Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Mayer, through Eric Clapton, to Robben Ford and Larry Carlton.

The circuit was designed for versatility and adjustable voicing, allowing you to choose between three midrange frequency cuts, inspired by classic amp tonalities:
Dumb (200Hz)Marsh (700Hz) and Twin (500Hz).

🎚️ MID CUT SWITCH

Controls the center frequency of the MID knob.
💡 Tip: start with the MID knob at minimum to clearly hear the effect of each voicing mode.

These three mid cut voices emulate the EQ response of traditional preamps (MarshallFender, and Dumble) when their tone controls are set at noon.

It’s a passive control, placed at the end of the circuit — meaning that at maximum, it doesn’t affect the EQ curve, and as you reduce it, the frequency cut becomes more pronounced:

  • Dumble: 200 Hz

  • Marshall: 700 Hz

  • Fender: 500 Hz

🎛️ FULL EQ

The bass, mid and treble controls are voiced to sound natural, like a tube amp.

The magic lies in the mids:

  • At maximum, the tone is flat relative to the circuit.

  • Reducing it gradually shapes the character of the sound.

  • To hear the tonal differences between modes, start with mids at minimum, then adjust to taste.

The bass control interacts with the distortion stage — above 2 PM, it may start to fuzz out.
💡 Tip: with Les Pauls or thicker-sounding guitars, reduce the bass to maintain clarity.

🔘 COMP SWITCH

The three “Comp” modes change the clipping behavior, defining the headroom and texture/smoothness of the distortion after amplification.

It behaves similarly to compression characteristics found in classics like the KlonMorning Glory / Blues Breaker, and TS808.
As some modes reduce overall output, use the volume knob to compensate.

Modes:

  • GLORY: more headroom, louder, open tone with less compression.

  • KLN: intermediate compression, smooth high-mids, elegant tone balance.

  • 808: strong compression, easy saturation, less output (can be compensated via volume knob).
