Head Captor – Passive DI for Amp Profiling

The Head Captor is a passive DI designed for creating profiles and captures of your amp using devices like the Kemper Profiler or Neural DSP Quad Cortex.
It allows these devices to capture your amplifier’s tone and dynamics (preamp + power amp) — through artificial intelligence — without miking the speaker.

⚠️ The Head Captor is not a Load Box.
The speaker must always remain connected to serve as a load, ensuring the integrity of your amplifier’s power section.
This real speaker interaction (power + speaker) provides DI profiles and captures with slightly more definition in the lows, low-mids, and high frequencies compared to resistive load boxes or reactive resistive loads — a subtle but noticeable difference.

We’ve made comparison captures available for free on our Neural network profile — just search for Tone Ink in the Neural DSP browser.

⚠️ BEFORE USING

Read the entire manual and watch our tutorial video on YouTube.
Incorrect connections may damage your amp or your Kemper/Quad Cortex.

CONNECTIONS

  • IN FROM POWER:
Speaker input (¼” jack). Connect the amplifier’s power output to this input using a speaker cable (not an instrument cable).
Always ensure the cable is connected before turning on your amp.

  • OUT TO SPEAKER:
Speaker output (¼” jack). Connect this output to your speaker cabinet input using a speaker cable.
Always ensure the cable is connected before powering up your amp.

  • DI OUT XLR:
Balanced XLR (Canon) output for connecting to the capture input of the Kemper or Quad Cortex, following the manufacturers’ guidelines.

  • TRS OUT:
Balanced TRS output for connecting to the capture input of the Kemper or Quad Cortex, as per the manufacturers’ instructions.

PRECAUTIONS

  1. The Head Captor is not a Load Box. It must always be used with a speaker connected.

  2. Never operate a tube amp without a speaker or load box connected to its power output — this can cause serious damage.

  3. Never use the Head Captor with phantom power. It can damage the unit.

  4. Always use proper speaker cables for all connections between amp and speakers. Instrument cables are not suitable for power transmission.

  5. Ensure impedance matching between your amp head output and your speaker cabinet. The Head Captor does not affect impedance.

  6. Do not use the Head Captor to connect your amp directly to a mixing console. Doing so is at your own risk.

All units are individually tested and quality-controlled from design through assembly, retesting, and packaging.
Connection errors or incorrect usage can cause damage to your gear. Tone Ink is not responsible for misuse or damage resulting from improper connections or specifications.
